Chapter 9

From the window, Abby watched Dorrie cross the street. Taking a deep breath, she left the shop and headed back the way they had come. She knew that her ancestor would know what to do. At least her ancestor would know what was going on and have the experience necessary to properly instruct Abby, something Dorrie obviously was not qualified to do.

As she strolled through the town and out into the open areas surrounding it, Abby began to feel at peace. It was beautiful. People clearly had troubles, but they seemed much more at one with everything, as if working the land really did make a person feel a sense of purpose. Abby could understand this. When she had taken an internship in an office her first year in college, back when she had feared to follow her dreams and was thinking about a more conventional job, Abby had quickly learned there was no way she could live working 40 hours a week in a place like that. It was unnatural. She shivered as she thought about it and was very glad that she had a future that she hoped would make her feel as peaceful as these people looked.

A ways out of the town, she saw a cute little college that looked very cheery. Not like she had seen in her time, but truly comfortable and homey. There were no lawn ornaments to make it look interesting or over-gardened areas that looked fake. The yard was well-tended, the fence was clearly maintained, and the house looked like the kind of place where she could spend the rest of her life if she had not had a time and a place that had her heart. Without knowing how she knew, the werewolf-witch knew that she had arrived at the home of her ancestor, and something told her that the older Abby was home.

With a childish grin on her face, Abby strolled up to the cottage door and knocked. She could hear someone inside moving around, but it was clear that whatever was going on, the person’s first reaction was not to answer the door. Abby knocked again, hoping that this was the house of her ancestor, Abby, the woman for whom she had been named.

Finally the door opened. Standing before her was a woman who definitely did not match the image Abby had of her ancestor. A woman with long blond hair, pure blond with no silver streak, stood before her. She stood a few inches shorter than Abby and seemed much sterner. The werewolf was at a loss for what to say.

Obviously growing impatient, the old-time Abby asked, “What is it?”

Abby simply shook her head and tried to speak without being able to find her voice. If she had not known better, Abby would have thought this was her mother, dressed up in a costume for Halloween. For a moment, time overlapped for Abby and she saw her mother and her ancestor standing before her, the same stern expression that her mother gave whenever Abby did something wrong.
